To involve residents in shaping the future look of the central city, the Dunedin City Council (DCC) is trialling a selection of paving in different colours and finishes (including pavers from Firth’s PaveWare range. Locals can fill out a survey at the DCC’s Customer Services Centre or online on which options they prefer and why. Feedback will help the DCC decide what types of pavers will replace the current terracotta brick pavers in central Dunedin.

“The pavers used in the trial have smooth and rough finishes, come in different colours, and are laid in straight and herringbone patterns,” explains Dr Crystal Filep, Urban Design Team Leader at the DCC. “The trial should reveal how the new pavers hold up in different weather conditions, especially during the colder months when it can get icy and slippery under foot. It also gives people the opportunity to be part of the decision making.”

“It's fantastic that the DCC has given local residents a variety of examples on how the CBD could look and feel,” says Nick Plimmer, Sales Representative for Firth.

Mark Lamb, Director of QC Contracting, which was appointed by the DCC to lay the pavers, says, “I am glad to see that the pavers chosen for the trial are concrete pavers, which will help a lot during the winter months when things can get a bit slippery. The laying all went well from our perspective. I have received some very positive feedback on what has been installed. It is great to see the DCC giving people the opportunity to have their say on what happens in the city.”

The pavers have been installed along the footpath from upper Stuart St, in front of St Paul's Cathedral, to George St, in front of the Civic Centre. “They will be in place for a few years so we can gauge performance,” adds Dr Filep. “We are looking forward to eventually upgrading the central city with a stylish, hardwearing, safe paver for the future.”
