Certified Concrete - Sylvia Park

Firth’s proud history with Sylvia Park

Firth has literally been ‘in on the ground floor’ as New Zealand’s largest retail complex, Sylvia Park, has taken shape in recent years.

Firth has been there from day one since work began on the much-awaited shopping complex, which was opened to the public in June 2006.

Sylvia Park boasts the largest number of shops under one roof in New Zealand – with more than 200 stores covering 6.5 ha of indoor space, 4,000-plus car parks, and the largest movie complex in the country.

The Mt Wellington shopping mecca is strategically located at the geographic centre of Auckland, and it’s estimated more than 50% of Auckland’s population can access Sylvia Park within a 20-minute drive time.

Having originally supplied between 75-85% of the total volume of concrete for Multiplex, the Australian developers, Firth continued to provide quantities of ready-mix concrete as the subsequent Stages of the project developed.

“During 2008 we have poured around 7,000m3 for Multiplex at the Sylvia Park extension,” says Marc Hainen, Firth’s COO, Northern.

“These are mainly multi-storey car parks and are essentially a series of 300m3 pours.”

The bulk of the concrete for Sylvia Park came from Firth’s Leonard Road site in Penrose, Smales Road in East Tamaki, Ourangi Drive in Mangere and Hamer Street, Auckland City.

There are also some interesting historic links between the modern-day versions of Firth and Sylvia Park. The shopping complex’s Mt Wellington site was formerly a storage area and hospital for the New Zealand Army. When this was originally built in 1942-43, the concrete was supplied by the Certified Concrete Company - which was the forerunner to Firth Industries.
