Award winning home features Firth products

An idyllic vantage point overlooking Lake Rotokauri is the location of a Greg McGovern Construction-built house that has won two awards the New Home ($1 - $2 million) and the Sustainable Homes (over $1 million) categories of the annual national 2010 Registered Master Builders Awards announced last November.

To minimise the carbon footprint the house was constructed using a pine laminate structure avoiding the use of structural steel. It is heavily insulated and features in-slab heating, solar water heating, double-glazing and worm-farm wastewater treatment.Article_a02

The use of internal block feature walls, using Firth's half high 20 series blocks, also supports year-round energy efficiency ensuring comfortable indoor temperatures and works on the principle of storing and emitting the sun's heat utilising thermal mass.

"All the masonry used in thehouse was supplied by Firth, said Greg McGovern, Director of Greg McGovern Construction. "This included the 20 series blocks used for the external walls of the garage, the internal feature walls, the planter boxes and garden walls, and the exposed aggregate 'Manorfield' used in the driveway. I have always used Firth for all my masonry and concrete requirements and their people are very knowledgeable and easy to deal with."

Greg McGovern and his team worked closely with the owners and the architect, Geoff Lentz, to ensure that every detail of this amazing home was built to the highest standard. "All decisions were made in consultation with all parties resulting in a spectacular home we are very proud of."
