Changes to the Building Code E2 - external moisture

Clause E2 is the Building Code provision that stipulates buildings must be constructed to provide adequate resistance to penetration by moisture from the outside to safeguard against illness or injury.

The current Building Code does not contain an acceptable solution for concrete and masonry which means that, although concrete and masonry systems are not seen as having a weather tightness issue by the Department of Building and Housing, there is the potential for delays at consent processing level. The industry, led by CCANZ, is in the process of developing a weather tightness solution for concrete and concrete masonry.

Comprehensive guidelines are being developed which will became an acceptable solution under the building code which is in scope with the existing acceptable solution for timber frame construction.

The guideline expands on the details provided in CCANZ and BRANZ publications which provide the industry with a set of comprehensive weather tightness instructions for all applications of masonry. An industry working party is currently bringing all the information together to develop this document.
