Power for 13,000 homes

Resource consent has been approved for a 200 Mega Watt (MW) wind farm at a site on the hills overlooking Lake Mahinerangi, 35kms west of Dunedin.

Stage one will be a 36 MW development, which will include the installation of sixteen 3 MW Vestas V90 wind turbines.

The expected long term annual output from the wind farm is forecast to be 105 Gigawatt hours per annum, which is enough power to supply around 13,000 Dunedin homes. Completion of the windfarm is expected in April 2011 with full commissioning by May 2011.

"Firth won the contract to supply approximately 5,000m3 for the bases of the turbines," said Dominic Sutton, Regional Sales Manager, Southern for Firth. "We should start pours in late October and be finished by Christmas. Due to the remoteness of the site and the speed with which supply is required we will be installing two plants to supply the farm. We will be using the Con e Co Lo Pro plant that was previously installed at the Auckland International Airport and our mobile Zengo plant."
